Default Re: Java Books

First I recommend "Head First Java, 2nd Edition" by Kathy Sierra & Bert Bates
Checkout link : http://www.amazon.com/Head-First-Jav.../dp/0596009208

After you finish that head on to

Core Java : Volume I : Fundamentals
Core Java : Volume 2: Advanced Features

Checkout the link : http://www.horstmann.com/corejava.html

And also download Java Tutorial from :

http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/

As per prices goes, check them out at your nearest good book stall.

I found "Sam's Teach Yorself Java in 21 Days" and "Java for Dummies" good books.. They are easy for people new to language and keeps you interested. (Wrox fail in this regard..Its boring and as T195 said..for hardcore programmers...)
