How to Maintain Documentation for projects

Hi Friend's we are working on a project on banking and is very complex in nature which involves a lot of team member's.Comment's can only help to certain extent.

Can any body suggest sofware's that will make our task easier so that the programmer can understand without loosing much time what the other person has done.
