I dont know what database facebook is using...but they surely convert the images to bytes & store it in DB.

A content management system (CMS) is the collection of procedures used to manage work flow in a collaborative environment.

In a CMS, data can be defined as nearly anything: documents, movies, pictures, phone numbers, scientific data, and so forth. CMSs are frequently used for storing, controlling, revising, semantically enriching, and publishing documentation

ex: Joomla is CMS

A Content Management System is an access controlled application to manage the contents in a collaborative environment. CMS system is generally used for storing, editing, enriching and publishing documents. In simple words you do your work in a ready to serve way. That means you dont have go developers way, but just know how that very CMS soft works and you're done, no more coding and settings! Like you have to prepare your blog site, then you have to start a server and do a hell of settings and all, plus then do PHP, flash and other things as per required, but CMS helps you to do in a very simple way (xampp helps in this). Ex- Joomla is most popular CMS, Drupal is another one.

Facebook uses a lot of different technologies for storing and managing data.

They are probably using custom solution (Haystack) for image storage.
