Better to get a stand alone scanner, lesser hassle of one thing spoiling and then the whole mfd is at a stanstill. But then again it also actually depends upon your usage as well. If its in a once a time use then buying a stand alone would be quite a waste of money, but if regular usage is there then a stand alone option is the best.
HP is a good brand of scanners , ive had three of them in quick succession. Prices will depend upon the kind of clarity, dpi etc requireed by you. Since its home use and general scanning then you should be able to get for one under 10,000 in any brand.
