    Intel rig
    Intel Core i5 2400: 10.8k
    Gigabyte B75M-D3H: 4.5k
    4GB DDR3 1333MHz: 1.1k
    WDC Blue 500GB: 3.8k
    BenQ G2222HD: 7k
    Corsair CX500V2: 3.5k
    Cooler Master Elite: 1.8k
LG 22x SATA DVD writer: 0.9k
    MSI N560GTX-Ti Twin Frozr II/OC: 13k
    Total: 46.4k
    AMD rig
    AMD Phenom II X4 960T: 7k
    ASUS M5A88-M: 5k
    Sapphire Radeon HD 7850/OC 2GB DDR5: 16k
    Deepcool Gammaxx 200: 1k
    Total 47.1k
    rest is the same.........

If I was in your place I would have got the AMD rig as it can be OC'ed, unlocked and would give much better perfomance overall.

    Motherboard Gigabyte GA-B75M-D3H 4500
    RAM Corsair Value Ram(1333MHz) 4GB 1300
HDD WD Caviar Blue 500GB 3900

Graphic Card Msi HD7850 Power Edition OC 16000

    Cabinet Coolermaster Elite 311 1900
Monitor Acer P225HQ 21.5" Full HD LCD 7400
    Total=49.4k

i5 2400 would be generally faster than an overclocked PhenomII X4 960T in most scenarios.
At 1680x1050 i5 2400 is faster in most games.
For gaming at full hd resolution the performance would be more dependent upon gpu but in some games which are more CPU-bound than others like star craft II , i5 2400 would be much faster than 960t.

^+1...but we are forgetting point no 3....overall i would say when playing at 1920*1080 a gpu will matter more than a cpu...so either way he is safe...
