Stuck while installing suse 11...please help
This is the situation, I have XP and Ubuntu installed and want to install Suse11. Here is the partition description, which was created by Gparted and all partitions for linux have been formatted in ext3 file system.
/dev/sda 37.3GB
/dev/sda1 7.9 GB NTFS WINDOWS/C
dev/sda2 19.3 GB EXTENDED
dev/sda3 10 GB NTFS WINDOWS/D
dev/sda5 9 GB F LINUX NATIVE (EXT3) /home ( This is where ubuntu is installed)
dev/sda6 9 GB Linux Native / ( This is where I intend to install Suse11)
dev/sda7 1.3 GB Linux swap swap
Upon installation, I am stuck at "Suggested partition" with the following:
I don't know how to proceed, whether I should choose Create partition setup or edit partition setup. What should I do next...it is all confusing.
Should I format dev/sda6 again? If yest, which system? ext3 is not in the list all. What should be the mount point?
I don't want to end up formatting the partition where ubuntu is installed. Help!!!!!!

Re: Stuck while installing suse 11...please help
Installing all these OS on just 40 GB HDD??!!
Anyhow, I would suggest you to boot on Windows-->right click on My Computer--->Select "Manage"--->choose "Disk Management"--->delete one of the extended partition (the one where you plan to install Suse) - but do not format this partition. Now boot using Suse Disk and, according to my experience, Suse will automatically select the "unformatted partition" as the installation partition and will suggest the other partitions accordingly.

Re: Stuck while installing suse 11...please help
Just select linux native or something is Suse partitioner. If I remember correctly then there is no labeling like ext3, jfs etc.
And do custom partitioning, do not go for guided or automatic.
Do not touch Ubuntu partition.

Re: Stuck while installing suse 11...please help
Sorry, it doesn't appear that easy for me!
There are too many options in this section that I am getting confused, it would be good if I am given a step by step instructions.
I refer to this image http://files.opensuse.org/opensuse/e...ing_-_YaST.png Look at this picture, what should i do? create or edit?
It is prompting to format dev/sda5/ where ubuntu is installed and I am not able to "unselect it". I need live assistance.
When I launch the installation, I am presented with the following suggested partitioning
Format partition /dev/sda5 (9 GB) for /home with ext3
Format partition /dev/sda6 (9 GB) for / with ext3
Use /dev/sda7 as swap
set mount point of /dev/sda1 to /windows/C
set mount point of /dev/sda3 to /windows/D
What should I do next, create partition setup or edit partition setup?

Re: Stuck while installing suse 11...please help
Click on Edit Partition Setup button and then manually select the partitions under partitioner.
This pic is just showing you the layout suggested by the partitioner.

Re: Stuck while installing suse 11...please help
When I click the edit partition, this is what is displayed:
Quote:
/dev/sda 37.3GB
/dev/sda1 7.9 GB NTFS WINDOWS/C
dev/sda2 19.3 GB EXTENDED
dev/sda3 10 GB NTFS WINDOWS/D
dev/sda5 9 GB F LINUX NATIVE (EXT3) /home
dev/sda6 9 GB Linux Native /
dev/sda7 1.3 GB Linux swap swap
|
followed by plenty of buttons such as create, edit, delete, resize LVM, RAID, crypt file, NFS, expert etc.
When I double click on /dev/sda6 ( where I want to install suse 11), I get a window with following:
Editing existing partition/dev/sda6
O Do not format
O Format
options
Fstab option
Mount point
I don't understand anything. This partition is already formatted in ext3 system.
If I cancel and go next, I still get the same suggested partitioning
Quote:
Format partition /dev/sda5 (9 GB) for /home with ext3
Format partition /dev/sda6 (9 GB) for / with ext3
Use /dev/sda7 as swap
set mount point of /dev/sda1 to /windows/C
set mount point of /dev/sda3 to /windows/D
|
What should I do next?

Hold on your horses till Nucleuskore comes back or better ask in OpenSuse forum.
There are not many OpenSuse users here and those who are, enjoying the sunday
Take a cup of your favorite beverage and chill out today, for holidays are so precious now.

Re: Stuck while installing suse 11...please help
I saw this message in the morning, was busy getting my site back online. I do not understand what he is trying to do.
First of all do know what all your partitions contain - which is the windows root (usually C drive or /dev/sda1), which is your Ubuntu root - /dev/sda? , do you have a /home partition?
I have a suggestion. Download and boot with GParted, take a screenshot (like this user has done http://www.thinkdigit.com/forum/show...php?p=867226#7) of your hard disk and post it here. Then I can explain to you clearly.

Re: Stuck while installing suse 11...please help
hmmmmm
just don't select the format partition option.
leave it.
using sudo fdisk -l find out the hda stuff
you should have good memory about space in each partition, this will help you, just write it down in a piece of paper in case.. then.

Re: Stuck while installing suse 11...please help
Well...well...welll...I figured it out myself. Even after so much of description, still finding it difficult to understand?

|
Response: Well, I have described the entire partition structure/file system and the OS in it. Check it again.
Quote:
/dev/sda 37.3GB
/dev/sda1 7.9 GB NTFS WINDOWS/C
dev/sda2 19.3 GB EXTENDED
dev/sda3 10 GB NTFS WINDOWS/D
dev/sda5 9 GB F LINUX NATIVE (EXT3) /home (This is where ubuntu is installed)
dev/sda6 9 GB Linux Native / (This is where I intend to install Suse11)
dev/sda7 1.3 GB Linux swap swap
|
What more is expected?
The main problem was the /dev/sda5 too being selected for formatting, which I wanted to avoid.
It was simple, all I had to do was to click on /dev/sda5, edit > uncheck format...and then select /dev/sda6 , edit > check format and selected / as mount....that's all.
The installation then described as follows:
Quote:
Format partition /dev/sda6 (9 GB) for / with ext3
Use /dev/sda7 as swap
set mount point of /dev/sda5 (9 GB) for / with ext3
set mount point of /dev/sda1 to /windows/C
set mount point of /dev/sda3 to /windows/D
|
That's all...then it went on like " makkhan". /dev/sda5 was left alone...that's what I wanted. Thanks anyway.
