Default Linux to gain anti-viru$ $oftware

An anti-virus software vendor has promised to protect Linux-based laptops and MIDs (mobile Internet devices) from "security challenges." McAfee says its encryption products will protect data on lost and stolen laptops, while its "mobile content" security products will help protect MIDs used to surf the dangerous "open Internet."

According to a McAfee statement, "As MIDs rely on the open Internet to bring applications and services to people, they will be susceptible to similar security challenges as the PC." The vendor promises to address the challenges by helping to "protect service providers and their subscribers from external threats."

McAfee's MID products will specifically target Intel's Atom Z5xx-series ("Silverthorne") processors for MIDs and other mobile devices. They will integrate with software from the Moblin project, founded by Intel to improve x86 software support for low-powered, small-form factor mobile devices powered by Silverthorne processors.

Pankaj Kedia, director of ecosystems at Intel's "ultra mobility" group, stated, "Intel's low power technologies, in combination with McAfee's experience in security solutions, should enable a more robust and secure solution."

No availability details or pricing was announced.

^^
LOL
Linux on its own is secure and there are just a handful of viruses known
These too can be tackled pretty easily
Hopefully, this wont cause Linux to be ridden with viruses in the future, like XP or Vista
It might give a wrong assumption for "converts" too as lack of viruses is one of the many USPs of Linux
And, why McAfee of all the AVs????

Right. In my office we have Mcafee corporate edition. It is not able to block even single threat. Every one here is bashing IT deptt for their purchase decision

Your "IT" department made such a decision??????? (read:quotes are intentional, no offence meant)
@nach
+1
Instead of improving an what is already a $h!t of an AV, they go to offer it to people who will never need it. (I hope the "never" remains a never in the future)

Linux does not need antivirus software. Its as simple as that. Because linux users have brains, and people with brains can't be affected by software that can only attack people who are dumb and run every executable they see in root mode.

Perhaps an intelligent shell script interpreter software would be welcome, which can warn users before they run a shell script regarding any potentially harmful operations the script may do.

As for internet security, we already have SELinux, IPtables, etc. Why do we need some no-name software from McAfee ?

@Gautham, but right now, Linux is also targetting the basic home users through distros like Ubuntu, etc being very newbie-friendly... So you cannot generalize that all Linux users are geeky knowing not to run random software with root permission... Still, even newbie Linux users dont need any av as of yet...

They must be thinking that Windows-convert are taking a liking for Linux and might just wanna install anti-virus/spyware/malware just as they were use to It wont be hard to dupe them, i guess.

When we have free softies like ClamAV and Antivir then wtf is point in selling other AVs. Better ask price for support than softies.
