Default GDium netbook to be Mandriva powered

The new GDium netbook from Emtec is to be powered by Mandriva Linux.

Emtec is launching a new UMPC netbook called the GDium which is to be powered by the Mandriva Linux operating system..The tiny 1.1kg netbook includes a 10" screen with a 1024 x 600 resolution and a four hour battery life, but no internal storage.

Instead, the operating system and all user data are stored on a USB stick known as the G-Key, which plugs into a USB port beneath the keyboard in the middle of the GDium..The G-Key supplied will be installed with a customised version of Mandriva Linux, developed specifically the for Emtec GDium.

Like the Asus Eee, this will have a streamlined boot process allowing access to the machine "in seconds."

Mandriva said that the OS itself has also been tweaked for the GDium:
Quote:
"It uses a customised, lightweight desktop environment to keep the system speedy and make the most common tasks easily accessible.

"It also comes with a set of licensed multimedia codecs to make sure playing music and videos won't be a problem."
Emtec is also introducing something called, rather comically, the 'Gayaplex'. Emtec describes this as "a discovery gateway where users can securely engage ino their digital life, build their community and find relevant, authoritative, educational knowledge content."Mandriva said that the OS itself has also been tweaked for the GDium: "It uses a customised, lightweight desktop environment to keep the system speedy and make the most common tasks easily accessible.

No offence but Ubuntu repo for a particular version didn't get updated .. Like you still won't find Banshee 1 in hardy repo.. while its easily accessible in Mandriva ...Also Mandriva Ui and tool are way better than that of Ubuntu
