Mostly USB modems would not work, you might need to spend in some 200/- and go Ethernet and driver-free!

I do have an internal ethernet. how do i use it in place of the adsl modem that bsnl provides??

I have Realtek RTL8169/8110 Family Gigabit Ethernet NIC(internal) which linux also detects.

I believe he was referring to the port the Router uses to connect to your system. Configuring usb modems are a PITA.
Check this thread Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's). Scroll down and you should find a couple of guides for configuring an Internet Connection. However I believe it is for Ubuntu not sure if it might help. But its worth a shot.
