go to another system with ubuntu.

do an apt-get install -d <package-name>
see location /var/cache/apt/archives/
there U will find these packages
copy them via cd or usb and transfer to YOUR folder (same location)

Thanks for the replies.
By the way what does Nucloskore thread mean.

Regarding the posting of library list.
There are many libraries mentioned in the section of how to install a mplayer in ubuntu forum. Below are only some of them. Besides some other packages also ask for diffrent libraries which are tedious to download one by one manually.

comerr-dev ladspa-sdk libaa1-dev libarts1c2a libarts1-dev
libartsc0 libartsc0-dev libasound2-dev libaudio2 libaudio-dev libaudiofile-dev
libavahi-client-dev libavahi-common-dev libcaca-dev libcairo-directfb2
libcairo-directfb2-dev libcdio-dev libcdparanoia0-dev libcucul-dev libcupsys2-dev
libdbus-1-dev libdirectfb-dev libdirectfb-extra libdts-dev libdv4-dev libenca0
libenca-dev libesd0-dev libfaac0 libfaac-dev libfreebob0 libfribidi-de

whats so special about mplayer. Use vlc much better than it. Also you need gstreamer codec pack to play all audio/video files through default ubuntu media player. Here are the download links for vlc & gstrteamer

Thanks mate for the links.
I do use vlc player in windows.
For linux I tried it. I downloaded 0.8.6f source and tried compiling it .
I got the message libmad not found. I downloaded it and installed it ,now it was showing the error ffmpeg/avcodec.h not found. So I downloaded ffmpeg library and used it but again the same error .
I also tried it on my friends comp. which had fedora 8 again the same error.
So now I am trying to install mplayer.
