Default Debian: Lenny is Funny

Hi All

I have just successfully switched to Debian Lenny from Ubuntu hardy.
Its taking a while to getting used to, but I hope I learn soon.
I thought I may ask some questions about debian here.

Here is my diary about the Debian install:

  1. This installer is too damn easy to use. Its fun. W00t! install completed.
  2. GRUB looks better than in ubuntu. WTH is this only 5 seconds wait time ?
  3. WTF ? Login in text mode ? K no problem.
  4. Guess KDE is not installed
  5. sudo apt-get install KDE
  6. sudo command not found
  7. hehehe even sudo is not installed by default
  8. time to leave
  9. hard reboot via restart button
  10. lets try single user mode
  11. WTF ? I forgot my password
  12. Woops. I guess I didn't forget the password after all. It was just slightly lengthened.
  13. apt-get install sudo
  14. thats better
  15. apt-get install kde
  16. insert CD ?
  17. ok fine. here you go
  18. inserted CD
  19. darn, I think the net is too slow
  20. 15kbps download speed for 2280kb
  21. rest from CD
  22. this install is boring
  23. let me play guitar a bit
  24. w00t! install finished
  25. exit
  26. yay! KDM!
  27. omgwtf ? kstartupconfig not installed it says when I log in
  28. time to go back to root mode
  29. apt-get install kstartupconfig
  30. package does not exist
  31. damn you
  32. time to go to sleep. will worry later
  33. so it turns out I don't have permission to view my own home folder
  34. reboot, go to windows mode, safe mode with networking
  35. find out the darn command for loading the list
  36. #think-digit @ chat.freenode.net
  37. QwertyM: I don't help distro hoppers and windows users unless I am bored
  38. Me: fug you
  39. aditya|movies: chown gautham /home/gautham -R
  40. aditya|movies: chgrp users /home/gaytgan -R
  41. Me: Thanks bro
  42. reboot
  43. yup problem fixed
  44. time to configure debian
  45. wait a sec, damn I lack sudo privilage
  46. restart
  47. google
  48. visudo was the command this time
  49. found I need to add gautham ALL = (ALL)ALL after a line root ALL = ALL(ALL)
  50. ctrl+X to exit, Y to save
  51. confirm my findings
  52. go to #think-digit again
  53. aditya|movies: useradd -G root gautham
  54. me: you sure ? here is mine...
  55. aditya|movies: whats visudo ?
  56. me: guess I shall try both in that case
  57. wow, editing worked
  58. damn aditya's methord said user already exists
  59. exit
  60. haha I am a sudoer now
  61. time to really mess with debian now
  62. configuring is fun
  63. I R 1337 themer
  64. lemme make my own theme, because default configuration sucks
  65. purple is good
  66. wait a sec, net was slow because debian uses BSNL DNS by default. my mistake.
  67. OpenDNS FTW !
  68. Time to try out more stuff
  69. I don't have a proper sources.list file
  70. can someone get me a good one ?

is there anything out of ordinary there ? I will keep updating...

well, why not understand almost all packages of ubuntu is available in Debian?
repositories for debian?
http://www.debian-multimedia.org
http://ftp.debian-unofficial.org/debian
http://www.rarewares.org/

these will be enough.
and remember I have seen with Kde installed, anyways you somehow need some gtk apps.so you already may have libgtk2 installed.no pain ,install synaptic.

I think you mistook debian

well, I have installed kpackage by default and I need adept.

I remember Roberto's Rare Wares, but its for multimedia audio encoding, etc. why did you of all ppl install it ?(I definitely abused rarewares on windows)

anyway, after installing GTK2+, howmany libraries are needed for gnome ?

can I force install of Gnome 2.18 instead of 2.22 ? (2.22 is a white elephant)

and debian multimdia lists only stable packages.
can I use them for testing ?
are they latest ?

finally, can you get me the apt lines directly ?
I am having difficulty finding them.

Bump:

I am considering Sidux as an alternative instead of Debian Lenny.
Lenny for some reason looks like it was built in a hurry.
I don't have half the packages I guess I need.
Startup and shutdown time are blazingly fast.
The distro is also highly responsive.
But I am still not sure about many things here.

So I am considering Sidux. How fast is it compared to normal Debian ?

Thanks.
I am installing sidux in some more minutes.
I finished burning it.

I just saved Rs. 408/-, because I decided to stick with getting myself a blogger account instead of a hosting from Faizal(Cyrus_The_Virus) for this one year. So with luck, I can also buy myself some extra ram.

So I can expect a REAL performance boost in a few weeks If luck is still on my side.

Again, Prakash, can you please give me a copy of your kernel ? We both have the same configuration, so I think your customised kernel can do wonders for me.

Smile Re: Debian: Lenny is Funny

my kernel?well it aint that customized, but sure used zen sources.even it may ask for dependency esp glibc and all.

If you want a good faster optimized kernel install 2.6.26-rc3-zen0-x0-core2-smp2 from rarewares.org.beware nvidia doesnt have support for 2.6.25+ kernels yet.but rarewares provides nvidia-kernel-2.6.26-rc3-zen0-x0-core2-smp2 .

OK, will try the rarewares kernel.
I don't give damn to nVidia because I am just another poor intel user.
Time to install Sidux. Perhaps I will do it tonight.
