![]() Linux Mint is an Ubuntu-based distribution whose goal is to provide a more complete out-of-the-box experience by including browser plugins, media codecs, support for DVD playback, Java and other components. It also adds a custom desktop and menus, several unique configuration tools, and a web-based package installation interface. Linux Mint is compatible with Ubuntu software repositories. Clement Lefebvre has announced the release of Linux Mint 5.0, an enhanced and user-friendly desktop Linux distribution based on Ubuntu 8.04. MintUpdate was refactored and its memory usage was drastically reduced. On some systems the amount of RAM used by mintUpdate after a few days went from 100MB to 6MB.Mozilla also greatly improved the memory usage in Firefox between version 2 and 3 (Read more).Elyssa comes with kernel version 2.6.24 which features a brand new scheduler called CFS . The kernel scheduler is responsible for the CPU time allocated to each process. Linux Mint 5 Elyssa is supported by CNR.com which features commercial services and applications which are not available via the traditional channels. The Software Portal introduced in Linux Mint 4.0 Daryna is receiving more focus as it represents the easiest way to install applications. anyway, I am not bad mouthing ubuntu. I am comparing two similar configuration OSes with common roots needing similar systems to run on. Ubuntu is a great OS for Newbies, I fully Agree. But Mint beats it because it provides a better set of applications, has more features, is easier to use and is newbie friendly. Unless you live in a country where every action of yours is copyrighted, like the US, you will have no trouble with Mint. So Ubuntu for americans, Mint for the rest of us. We mustn't forget that Ubuntu is supposed to be an operating system designed keeping newbies, not pros in mind. So if thats what its scope is, I would HAVE to say Mint is better. Look at the following factors: 1. Debian has the simplest and easiest package manager 2. Gnome is the most newbie friendly environment 3. Ubuntu is an OS with excellent commercial support 4. There exist few newbie friendly Debian/Gnome based OSes except Ubuntu and company. 5. Ubuntu is restricted by American copyright laws and African design laws. 6. Ubuntu is based on debian as an easy to use OS 7. Mint is designed as what ubuntu should be 8. Mint has no american copyright issues CLEARLY MINT IS THE WINNER OF THE MOST NEWBIE FRIENDLY OS EVER and only some paid distros can beat its user friendliness, that too by a tiny amount. But in the end this doesn't concern me one bit because I am not a newbie. So I may pass judgements, but they are of little significance to me and my choice of OS.

Yes, but I guess you would accept the fact that Ubuntu has made far more contribution to upstream than Mint. Quote:

Is it based on Hardy?
I have a separate /home folder, so what command should i use to clean up old Ubuntu configuration files if i install Linux Mint? Should i delete gonf related folders? Was it gconf-cleaner?

mint ubuntu is just more comfortable the first time you use it than vanilla ubuntu. This makes all the difference, because two operating systems extremely similar inside are so radically different just because of the outer look and feel and friendliness.

I don't get it . Is there some kind of trend of comparing Ubuntu with every other thing.

To end this may I say. This was never a distro comparison thread. Your " You are a noob if you run Ubuntu, I run Random Distro 101 and is l337" attitude sucks. Do yourself a favour . Buy yourself a clue. And concluding , Please read this http://kmandla.wordpress.com/2007/08...-leave-ubuntu/

When did I ever tell things the way you describe them ? You have misquoted me everywhere. And you are trying to get some other meaning out of what I am saying. Can't you give it a rest for some time ? Did I ever say ubuntu sucked ? Did I ever insult ubuntu runners ? I love ubuntu. I think its one of the greatest distros. Ubuntu is an inspiration for what a radically different distro can do. Till then, people thought only windows like start button can attract people. But now Ubuntu is a household name with linux. Lots and lots of people use Ubuntu. Finally, some computers preloaded with linux specify OS as Ubuntu 7.10 Linux OS And I give all this the credit its due. I hate it when people like you think that just because I am leaving ubuntu it means I hate it and think it sucks and is useless. I am still posting from Ubuntu FYKI and I intend to install debian lenny only later tonight. I am trying to enjoy every last moment with it.(actually, I am also helping anirudh with mac4lin beta testing, as I won't use gnome again.) If I said mint is better for newbies than ubuntu, does that mean I am bashing ubuntu ? Better watch your mouth FilledVoid.

Let me put it in English for you so you would understand . THIS WAS NEVER ABOUT UBUNTU. (Do you understand this?). Your post makes sounds like every other person who runs Ubuntu some kind of 2 year old. Anyway I have the least desire to try to get any sense into you. If there's something I hate its "Elitist Posers"

2. I am not elitist. I hate elitists myself. 3. I didn't threaten you the way you think I did. I just said I am pissed off at the way you are interpreting me. Where do you get such crazy ideas about me ? Do you think I am a guy who hates anything that does not work well on his system ? Do you think I am an anti mainstream elitist ? Do you think I am attempting pwnage of ubuntu ? If you think any of these things, you are grossly mistaken. I am just another guy, and just another standard linux user who has no biases towards anything. Over here I was appriciating Mint for what it has become and you are taking it to be an insult to ubuntu. If I said Slackware is faster than Fedora does that mean I say fedora is bad ? I use some unwanted strong language, which I can't help because I write/talk that way. Anyway, sorry for that outburst. I hope I can control myself next time
