Default Need help in Ubuntu..

Hi all..

recently, I installed Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. I have a problem in installing the packages. I dont have an internet connection @ home. So, I need to dwnld the packages from somewhere and take them to install. I have a problem with the dependent packages. Is there any site/program to install/download the required/dependent packages once for all? I have downloaded some packages but they depend on other packages. I note them and download again and try to install, only to see that it depends on some other package. Isnt there any program to install like windows which gets the needed files?

in the ubuntu package download site, I see many files as dependent packages and so on. should I have to download all of them one by one? The hierarchy goes on and on. Is there a simple way to dwl the packages for offline install?

I downloaded the avant window navigator package and avant window manager package. when I try to install one, the window gives an error that dependency not satisfied and gives the other file as the dependency. I have both the files in the same folder.
Could anyone help with this?

Is there any way to install the necessary codecs for multimedia like mp3, dvds, dat etc, like the klite mega codec pack? Its so annoying with the dependent packages. Is it impossible to get working with Linux without an internet connection?

Thanks in advance...

Lets answer your queries one by one. By installing Ubuntu without an Internet connection as sort of a bad choice . but nonetheless lets make the best out of it .

Go to http://getdeb.net/ and then download the software from a friends computer. Copy the the files and install them as usual or better yet you could create a directory on your home drive which Ubuntu can use as a source and then have it check that for files rather than the internet. getdeb lists all the dependencies you need for a program and should allow you to get it from there.

Another option is downloading the programs from the thread created by CadCrazy below which contains alot of programs and the dependencies I believe.

You could also download the programs using Synaptic from a friends computer if he is using the same distro / install type and then copy the files using AptOnCd and then brign ti back to your computer and install it.

The easiest option. take your CPU to your friends house or wherever and download the packages like you would at home .

Refer the above getdeb gives you all the packages listed together and you can download them at one go.

Could you post the specific error that you get. Also make sure you follow the following tutorial.

Just install the package called ubuntu-restricted-extras and you should be good to go.

Thanks Pat..
I downloaded them. but APTonCD looks like I have to install it in ubuntu and then, I have to first download the packages through a package manager to get the work done. It looks like this is sort of backup like tool. But I run windows where I download the packages. Is there any way to download the dependencies when I download the packages or any torrent/site that has the download for the offline repos?

Thanks for the quick response..

Read my response above. Getdeb works regardless of what you are on.
