driver for linux.

hi,

i own 128 kbps internet connection. the modem i use is from Beetel, and the software i use is from "GlobE Span Virata" provided by "touchtel india". the problem is that i dont want my modem to be connected thro a router. And so, i am not able to connect to internet in Linux. I dont have a driver for my modem corres. to Linux it seems.. the touchtel ppl said so. how can i get a driver for that? is there such drivers available atleast now? any latest version of linux has it? or any1 solved this problem with out going for ne connection? i restrain from linux just coz of this internet.. i would like to learn it otherwise.. pls help me with this. thanks.

how does the modem connect to your PC ? Must be on the network port . so there are no drivers required just add a default route to the modem thats it. Sounds confusing tell me the Ip of your PC and the modem and i will tell you the exact command.

i connect my modem at present to my USB port. the providers said, it could be configured using the ethernet card also on a router based... blah.. which i was not so sure of.. i mean i am not good at that (router).. not taht good at networking!

but, they said, for me 2 work on linux, i dont have a driver from the providers and so have 2 configure as a "router" ?? what does that mean actually.. i am not sure. and, i will not only install linux.. i plan 2 have both..

The USB driver for the modem may be difficult try the egpt manifacturer's site. The setup via the network card is an easier solution ther is no rocket science here just a few commands to enable the packets to be routed correctly. So i suggest first install a good distro and then connect the modem to the network card setup default route to the modem and maybe later set up a firewall. Thats it and the command for the so called router thing is a simple oneliner e.g.
#route add default gw 192.168.1.100 eth0
thats it.

ok... now which is more advantageous... and why? and can i have my modem connected USB in windows and network card connected in linux? i dont ru n both at the same time!

i agree with pradeep_chauhan , the best way wuld be thru a nw card .
and abt having both usb modem in win and n/w card in linux , i guess u may hav to pay touchtel for the n/w card .

i switched myself to ethernet modem.. and everything works fine! sorted out really wierd problems with those though!
