Default Problem with Ubuntu!

Hi

I have compaq presario v3225au laptop. I installed 64 bit ubuntu 7.10 last week and it rocks. But I have few questions.

1. Sound does not work all time : First 2 bootups my sound did not work. I did a google search and came up with couple of tutorials. I checked everything. and all drivers etc were fine but no ound.

then in the third boot. Sound worked. I have no idea how it worked. The I used the automatic updated manager and installed some updates. Then after the restart sound was still OK. But yesterday sound stopped working. Any idea why this funny behaviour?? Please help!

2. Earlier I used to try different version of linux (along with windows) and when I want to rempve Linux, what I do is delete the partion, which has linux, usinf disk management in Windows.
and it worked fine.

now I want to do the other way round. I had windiows installed earlier. now I have bothe Win and Ubuntu. I want to remove Windows.

Can I do this by booting into ubuntu and formatting the drive which has windows installation. Will this work??

Shoban

1. What sound card do you have?
If you are not sure, then post the output of lspci.

2. Yep, format the partition, and remove its entry from Grub.

I have a similar lappy and believe me its the sound drivers..Last time I checked Ubuntu forums (2 months back), there were a couple of tutorials to get the sound working but none of them worked flawlessly..

Btw, the sound card is Intel HDA Audio..I have heard that if you use pulseaudio, then the audio may work as expected..

Also I have observed that sound works everytime you cold boot your laptop..I mean powering it on and starting linux (and not rebooting after starting xp for the first time or linux)

My Realtek HDA was a disaster. But then again I was using Ubuntu 64 bit.

My experiences and the methods I used and whatever links I mustered up can be found here.

Pat this is right.. My sound worked when I booted directly into Ubuntu.

Any one has any idea how to solve this?

I used this method to get sound working on My Dell 1720. But still volume level is very slow. Better wait for Ubuntu 8.04. It has pulse audio. I tried Hardy Alfa once and sound was perfectly working without applying any patch. Although volume level was still below my expectation.

Why dont install pulseaudio now?It isnt tough.just install all the packages(not necessary though).
well,below link explains fine

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio

also,@Pat:I think you should try building hda drivers into kernel and try! rather than building as modules.
ie,build a kernel with ALSA.(no modules for sound)
