Re: Should I use Linux for internet?
yeah sure, linux rocks in net speed.
There are no antivirus, and other malwares that can hinder and no bandwidth eat u due to trozans and viruses.
Infact the speed is quite good compared to windows.

Yes. Make the download partition FAT32, preferably.

These days NTFS support is reached stable state, i think.
Also with FAT32 files larger than 4Gb are not possible, which means no to DVDs. Better make a NTFS filesystem

Valid Point.
But NTFS write has caused problems for me, even to this date. Hence I haf a large FAT32 Partition for downloads and put all the stuff in there. Files larger than 4GB (which are just 1 or 2 among 500 downloads) are downloaded to my Linux ext3 partition. Upon downloading I immediately burn it, tho I haf a large /home partition.

Re: Should I use Linux for internet?
Any specific distros? And why the immediately there? Most of my 4GB+ files are in my /home.
To the OP, everything that can be done online in Windows, can be done in Linux. And its safer and better too.

On my PC some files are soo big that they won't fit into DVDs
while most files are around 4Gb mark, Highest file is around 35GB(blueray).

Re: Should I use Linux for internet?
AFAIK, Windows reserves some bandwidth for system usage and updates.
So, that maybe the reason , apart from AV/Firewalls , why internet seems faster.

Yes using a Linux Distro on the Internet is quite more secure although I guess you can still browse the Internet safely using Windows if you are careful and have the right stuff installed.

Check out the other links given above. The "how to forge one" is an excellent resource to install Ubuntu.

Re: Should I use Linux for internet?
I hav formatted two drives C:,F: both r fat 32.
On C i installed Xp and on F: (20 GB) i want to install ubuntu.
i read two installations guides
http://www.howtoforge.com/dual_boot_..._ubuntu_feisty
http://digitalgraphy.wordpress.com/2...ows-ntxpvista/
First one says make 2 partitions 1 for SWAP another for installation of ubuntu
Second one says make 3 partitions 1 for SWAP 2nd is small ext3 partition abt 50MB and last one for installation.
Which guide should i use?
I have total 4 drives from which C & F are empty while D & E have data.
I don't want to loose data on D and E.
Also i heard that older version of linux is better to install is it true?
which ubuntu should i install ubuntu 7.04 or 7.10?
my modo have realtek HDA. Any prob. with sound?
