Default openSUSE 11.0 Alpha 2 Released

The second alpha version of openSUSE 11.0 was launched and it is available for download and testing. Althoughit is just a development release, this version comes packed with some important improvements.

Here are the most essential changes since the Alpha 1:
  • KDE 4.0.1 replaced KDE 3.5.8 as the default K Desktop Environment;
  • GNOME 2.21.90 was integrated in this release;
  • The installer was greatly improved;
  • Live CDs for both GNOME and KDE are now available;
  • The CD editions support German as an additional language;
  • The DVD editions contain only OSS software;
  • Linux 2.6.24;
  • OpenOffice.org 2.4 Beta;
  • Alsa 1.0.16 RC2;
  • D-Bus 1.2 RC2;
  • X.org 1.4.1 Pre.

The developers have found some bugs, which are not yet fixed. Here is a short list with the most annoying ones:
  1. Progress dialog "Loading the Package Manager..." blocks the installation-update proposal. Although you can accept the proposal by clicking on the "Accept" button, you can't see the proposed data/values.
  2. KDE3 autostart applications may crash on KDE4 startup;
  3. Mono apps do not work on the GNOME LiveCD;
  4. Missing graphical menu on Live-CD;
  5. Popups during the installation behave sporadically.

Remember that this is an alpha release and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended to be used for testing purposes only. Please report bugs to the openSUSE Bug Tracker

openSUSE 11.0 release schedule:
  • 6 December 2007: openSUSE 11.0 Alpha 0

i think its a gud idea to have a linux OS too on a corner of HDD, so that i can be online even if windows gone kaput by viruses or driver issues.
I just want best looks nd ease of use, nd only features i want are music, video player, browser nd some word processor, pdf reader, nd some IMs like gtalk, or yahoo.

So which is best for me? Ubuntu or suse.
I ve once used suse way back when 9 was released nd was happy with its interface. Is ubuntu too is fool proof or suse is better for ma needs?

^every distro has 3 D compiz-fusion support.Ubuntu by default have it.

Also,suse is bit difficult with package management and also needs a bit more on resources.

but u can download and try fedora-8 livecd(gnome)
or any other debian based distro like mepis.

Grr... I am a little late thins time. But you know, there has been another attempt. Or I should say that it is being developed, a new package management algorithm.

It is said that it will reduce the parsing time a lot as compared to 10.3. It will be there in 11. So there is a chance. Remember your words though...

I downloaded and used the livecd 11.0alpha2.the livecd takes hell lota time to boot!really,kde4 is innovative.but...inside it is kde3 again

well,I tried opensuse for a week on hdd.(opensuse 10.3 kde).the distro is good and fast in my system ().only gripe is yast2 is a central package management thing which requires to be run for every small changes.taking much time.also I liked the way repositories are shown in yast to choose from.but that said,suse requires lot of time to update all those repositories.

also I tried configuring dataone in pppoe mode.yast got dsl option which creates a provider0 as config(in /etc/sysconfig/network/providers/).then u have to just use "kinternet" tool to dial.make sure u need to enable "smpppd" service up and running.

anyways,Now I have formatted the partition I cant stand kde3.xx too clunky!

^^ Well... you can try gnome. It is good. And LIVE CD is crap. (Of course it is... it is alpha).

But, I am waiting for the new improvements (well.. promised improvements) to come true. If only we had something like synaptic for SUSE....

Been using it for a year and half. I like it a lot. Again, it is personal. I did not like Ubuntu at all. But people (some people) worship Ubuntu.

Never tried fedora though. You try and tell me. I will have a go then.

@praka123... hey man... why is the world suddenly going crazy over Gnome... i mean what kinda advantage is it having over kde... all those distros i've 'used' till date, i've used kde as my main desktop environment.
if you can post some links focusing on why one should dump kde for gnome.. i know it's kind of subjective and depends on personal preference but still...
Thanking ya in advance

ps. if memory serves me right, i did read somewhere that Linus himself hates gnome for being too simplistic... that it has reached such a point that its not so useful.. and had even urged users to use kde instead.

It is personal preference only and Gnome is simplistic and un-cluttered,unlike kde.world is not going to Gnome(I am not sure!).I like Gnome although I failed with kde.
also linuxquestions.org vote shows that kde is 50% and Gnome-36% popular among Linux users.guess what?

Another Gnome user here. Im kind of depressed after seeing KDES menus etc. Gnome is much easier to use in my opinion.
