I am using Ubuntu 7.10, so i will give instructions about Ubuntu only.
First install pppoeconf through Synaptic.
Open a Terminal and type
Code:
sudo pppoeconf
. It will ask for Root Password. Enter your password when prompted.A Blue Window will pop-up.
The first page would recognise your ethernet as etho> continue to next will check for connection> till you get to username page. Enter your username like xyz@dataone , remember .in is not required. Next enter your Password. COntiue further without changing anything. Select No when asked for BootUp Connection.

To connect enter in the Terminal
Code:
pon dsl-provider
.
To Disconnect enter
Code:
poff
You can create Shortcuts on the Desktop. Enter the respective commands in the command option. To create shortcuts Right-Click oon the Desktop and select "Create launcher"
