Strange I had an Onboard 6150 and it auto detected the resolutions upto 1024x768. I dont use anything more than that so I didnt bother with checking whether I should correct it.

Im guessing you are going to have to edit Xorg.conf to get the correct resolutions in there but Im not experienced enough to do that.

edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf section "screen" and select only the needed resolution as below for eg:i chose 800x600 for 15" monitor.if u want 1024x768,add as below or for any needed resolution which ur monitor supports .
Code:
Section "Screen"
	Identifier	_____________
	Device ________________
	Monitor ____________________
	DefaultDepth	24
	SubSection "Display"
Modes	"1024x768" "800x600"
	EndSubSection
