Question Linux : Whats the profit???

im a newbie, i know linux is an open source and free distribution.. but how does the company gets profit from it then? can anyone clear my doubt..

http://follars.com will answer that.in one word:FOSS(Free/Libre,Open Source Software) works on subscription system where a software is free,but for custom updates and enhancement the developer can charge an amount though it can be done by companies.

Um,wrong section dude.
Ask the mods to change it to opensource.

As for money,companies make profits by selling support rather than the os itself.
Companies like RedHat,Novell etc sell special Enterprise editions coupled with support to make money.

Well... for start, you might have to spend some time learning Linux, but in the long run, compared to the countless re-installations and reducing system responsiveness with M$ OS.... you can save a lot of time eventually....
