Default Bootable usb linux

I need a usb Linux with the following packages

Essential:
Latex
Xfig
Gnuplot
Ntfs support
Gnumeric
Shell / awk
C / c++ programming
Preferred /Optional
Internet support (wvdial, kppp, Firefox or better / opera with flash / java support)Thunderbird
Samba (windows connectivity)
Mp3 support
Java (J2se)
Kernel 2.4 or better 2.6
It shoulg be possible to save my files on to the usb drive. i.e. it should have a writeable home folder. Can have a swap partition on USB

Preferred usb size
I – 2 GB or less
Prefer a distribution which runs with 256 MB ram
Rather a lean and mean distribution
I can also try making one.
I have the following CD’s
I have Opensuse 10, ( 5 cd)
Opensuse 10.2 DVD
Solaris 10 DvD
Red Hat 9
FC 4 available with me
I also have knoppix, slackware, ubbuntu, kubuntu live.

I am currently using RH9 / Opensuse 10

Can any body guide me ?

You can use Reconstructor for Ubuntu to customize it as much as you desire.

Next, you can follow this guide on how to boot Ubuntu via an USB drive.

The best stuffed distros known to run well off a USB drive I know are: Knoppix, Puppy, DSL etc.

Check for puppy and Slax. If puppy fulfills your need then go for it as it is lighter on resources. But slax has the advantage of having much more softwares, which can be easily added as modules.
