Default Linux is Pain!!!

For Guys who doesnt have internet at home.

Default installs of any distro lacks few programs that are very much needed mainly Multi Media and Updated Drivres.

In case of interent connection its so easy.. Just add to source list and run synaptic Yast, apt-get etc..

But if you dont have internet then its a nightmare to install the simplest of softwares.

Go search repositories for the .deb and then when it begins to install it asks for a zillion dependancy Files whos names are often freraking long. Then you again go to cafe looking for them and then come their own dependancy and **** blabla

I am tired of this....giving up on linux till I get internet.. Current distros are NOT running on my PC out of the box and need some "Third Party" software / drivers to be instaled which is again real pain [refer above ]

I am feeling sick

Try Linux Mint.
It has all necessary codecs for multimedia.
Also due to reasons, linux cannot bundle proprietary softwares in the distros.

Default Re: Linux is Pain!!!

The ISO Thing of following ditros is tested & FAILED on my hardware:

1. Debian ETCH 4.0
2. Suse 10.2, 10.3
3. Linux Mint
4. Vector Linux
5. Fedora 7

Some how Ubuntu 7.04 Worked but the CD has practically nothing useful other than basic system to be honest.

Ubuntu Ultimate? Whats that. Kubuntu, Edubuntu, Ubuntu, Xubuntu and stuff I read but what Ultimate edition? I bet i have to throw good bucks for that as anything "Ultimate" costs bombs.

Ubuntu Ultimate isnt updated for the latest release.
Also,IMO its better for you to go for Sabayon instead of Ubuntu Ultimate.

Thanks for the DVD Prakash. I actually just installed it with one drive in the beginning and then connected the IDE later. Had to edit root (hd0,0) to root (hd1,0) . But then again the first install on the IDE drive was perfect. Everything was working fine till I realized that I had installed it on my IDE and not PATA drive.

If I ran a DVD burner program and copy the same DVD would it work? Thinking of installing it on a network where I work for students . Of course I'll need to read some before I implement it on a larger scale.

Will post experiences after some time working with it . Maybe a Document showing the process I used to install and get this running as well.

Not a teacher. More of a Computer technician guy who pretty manages a small Colleges network (Not a big deal its a Distance Education college) . Previously worked with a company that provided support for Microsoft products and other software (lol yes I know thats kind of ironic) . At the moment doing my MCA through distance Education.

Will make a copy of the Distro and try to get some to convert of course. im pretty sure some of my friends will . One of them already borrowed my USB stick to try NimbleX .

Yeah I agree with you...but answer me this...when you have an Operating System that is distributed 95% ... hell, 99% over the internet...software for which distribution is done online, and for an OS which, nice though it is, is fragmented like hell, with a billion different package management systems...WTF do you expect?

I think people would not agree, but from my experience.... Use knoppix. Install it on hardware with no net access. I have been using one on my old box and it works cool.

Recently installed Linux Mint Cassandra KDE, as there are a whole lot more packages than gnome and I swear that I'm VERY happy, but they could do a better job adding the more basic softwares. For example, K3B was missing and I had to download it. Making use of a full 4.5GB of a DVD would be wiser than just 2GB of issuing the distro. Overall, it feels really fresh after having this Mint

I was able to install Ubuntu practically with no hassle at all. I did not find any difficulty. I think its plainly written. Easy to udnerstand. Get the DVD edition if you dont have internet con. Cause even with it you might have to download a couple of things. If you are a person who does number crunching stuff like encoding or DVD/cd writing theres a huge performance increase. All my hardwrae was detected I took my system to the internet cafe near by and I didnt configure anythign and the network was already autodetected and I could see every single machine he has in my Network.

Im wiriting the process I did with pictures but it still a work in progress. If you are a Tv Tuner Card user Check the Chipset model and confirm Linux supports befopre working on it.

Hope this helps.
