Default This is so lame haha

I upgraded my PC to Dual Core and my Debian 4.0 is not getting installed

I think the DVD I got with a magazine is for 32 bit Single Core only

Now thing is I cant live without Linux as I am pretty used to it and only use Windows for Games.

I got Fedora 7 64 Bit & OpenSuse 10.3 now which of these have better Multimedia supprt.

[I am talking about default install and nothing to be downloaded from internet as I dont have internet at home. Also its a pain to install software if you dont have net access to the Tux box.

first of all 32bit versions works with all processors(both 32bit and 64bit).

Both don't contain multimedia support out of the box. Beginnerwise, OpenSUSE 10.3 is a better choice than Fedora 7.

My Config is in Sign. I think AMD64 / smp Kernel based Variant is needed to run on my config.

I tried OPEN Suse and Fedora sites and found that popular formats are not supported as they are patented.

I am so used to debian and it really rox.... But 64 Bit SMP Kernel Variant is no where to be found for me

ps: I am using linux around 2-3 years now so not exactly newbie but Never used Linux for internet or updated it through internet.

I will check with some friends for downloading it though =]

Anyone knows if someone sell Linux DVDs for nominal values? :$ I am willing to pay for a Debian 4.0RC1 AMD64 DVD

Why not try getting to the core of the issue. Where are you getting stuck in debian? At what point? What error message? If you're not getting enough errors, use a more verbose mode with installer.
Are you using the new GUI installer or the old installer?
If you can pass me some more details, I can may be try having a talk with debian people on IRC and find out if there's anything useful.

That's not the point. Point is to find out the reason where it's going wrong. It maybe a bug. And if it is, we can report it. So, much the better for others too. And it's always better to try and solve the problem it makes things easier.

Debian sure rocks.Debian Etch mostly supports ur dualcore system.try get to the details of ur install problem read the verbose errors.press ctrl+alt+f12 for some clues.use cli ncurses based debian installer.select expert option(press F1toF8 for help at boot prompt) to have to select 64bit supported kernel.only debian lenny(testing) have Debian amd64 support(which ubuntu too uses).if u have B/W,try latest lenny it is uptodate with Gnome or kde too.while Debian Etch is a lil old packages with bugfixes only.also debian supports multimedia very well.

Found the problem

8600 GT is not supported :$

Last nVidia Range Supported was 7900

so its saying no screens found etc. I guess I have to wait for some version which has inbuilt 100.x.x mVidia driver

corrupting partn table?I think debian cli installer is much better.install it using some options like noapic irqpoll etc pressing f1-f12 will give u specific options for ur hardware.i think ur hdd are in sata-II mode which may not be supported by debian etch.it shud be switched to sata-I ?

Default Re: This is so lame haha

Let me go through my attempts in detail:

First: Installed XP worked Fine
Tried Debian Default Install Kernel Panic Error nothing got installed.
Partiotion Table was intact and after restart XP booted normally.

Second: Tried No Apic No lapic options. Debian GOt installed. GRUB Installed. Restarted PC.
GRUB SHowed up. Loaded XP nicely and smooth. AGain I restarted and booted in Debian. Error came up. [No screens Found X server disabled (gdm)]
Restared PC Screen Came up

GRUB Loading Please Wait..... [5 Mins and nothing] so I restarted and Booted from Bootable XP CD and Checked Partitions with diskpart on repair options.

It showed All partitions are "UNKNOWN" type. FIXBOOT showed that Boot sector data is corrupt. So I has to delete all partitions and recreate to install XP. FIX MBR didnt WORKED.

THIRD TIME: Same thing. This time I checked the Technical Data thing of why GUI is not coming up. It showed me No devices found and a list of supported nVidia Cards which tops out at 7900 Series. So mine is not supported.

I had to restore like 10-15 GB data from my backup DVDs and CDs twice due to this.

I never had any error with any Linux installation earlier on my older comps.
I worked on Corel, Redhat, Suse, Debian, Ubuntu 7.04 and all worked fine on my old comp. But since upgrade No flavour of linux is being installed.

I tried OPEN Suse 10.2, Debian ETCH 4.0. Linux MINT [last month DVD]

Only thing to try now is Vector Linux which has nVidia Driver built in. But I dont like Vector much and dont want to screw up my system thrice (

ps: I dont think there is any prob with HDD. It gets detected correctly and also file copying / partions went well.

Can I get a SID or Lenny version of CD which will install Kernel and Driver stuff then use my existing Debian ETCH DVDs to add up rest things?

I use sid which got almost same cli installer also remember etch got gui installer too.u have to enter something like installgui not sure.(my debian is running nearly a year).
also tell me what is ur hdd 160GB SATA-II?.dont loose ur faith on seeing Display not found.it is because of nvidia gfx which needs driver.complete ur installation.press F1 or F2 to see GUI installer options.
installing sid is somewhat difficult for u i think.upgrade to lenny after Etch installed.
do this, first get debian installed somehow.if u feel debian really tough.I feel you may need assistance by someone who knows.grub waiting for 5 minutes?i think it is grub which failed to install which we can reinstall via any livecd.

Debian I think for you needs a little patience.

I am very much admire .deb and flavours of it. .rpm based flavours I didnt liked much as almost 90% time there was a dependancy screwed up

I just checked Distrowatch.com for .deb based solutions. Ubuntu 7.10 comes with preinstalled latest nVidia Driver 100.xx.xx.xx something. So I think it might work on my PC.

blah I hate to work on Windows Linux was lot faster and more fun

--------------------=---------------------

Btw default install of debian didnt work so I installed with

boot: install expertgui noapic nolapic

I will give Ubuntu Live CD a try and if it works then will check back with Debian when 5.0 Comes out
