ur config is too old.try a distro the likes of Antix.also buffer i/o error is may be of a badly burned cd(in nero select disc-at-once option) or other reasons.

On which device is it showing buffer i/o error? If floppy drive(fd0) try disconnecting power supply to the floppy drive and then installing.
But like Praka suggested try using an old distro .. maybe redhat9 or 8 etc.

using an old distro is not at all appreciable.but get urself "new" distros for low/old hardwares with light weight window managers.
Antix is such a distro.it is mepis(deb based) made for old h/w.

How about Damn Small Linux?? It runs a 2.4 Linux kernel and supports a lot of old hardware...but get praka's okay first...he knows way more about linux than I do.

try ELX(Everyone's Linux) it ran on 500 MHz system with 128 MB ram.
otherwise go for Arch Linux
if both does not work then go for CentOS
if none of the 3 distro work,
then final options are Puppy Linux / Damn small linux.

Just Giving alternatives.

r u askin me or him abt " old h/w or what "... ??
yes go for 2.6 kernel only, tat is why i suggested dsl in last as it has 2.4 and usually dsl also does not support some via's southbridge.

Nothing really wrong in using a 2.4.x kernel. Remember it's not outdated it's still maintained. But, no new features are added to it, just bug and security fixes. So, people may miss out on some better features implemented in 2.6.x kernels.
