Question how do i beautify my desktop?


i am using ubuntu 7.04 with all latest updates.
i want to know how i can make my desktop beautiful AND FUNCTIONAL while not losing too much performance?
what all software are there?

i am new to linux so pls give easy to undesrstand answers.

if u want aero in linux then install beryl or compiz-fusion(this is recent one).

(this is optional)

u can use superkaramba for display ram,processor,mobo temp, hdd usage.

can superkaramba be used without probs in gnome. i thought it was for kde

also what else can i use except beryl i already have that right now.

Well, you can look out for those docks, etc general stuff, cause almost all types of Windows customizations are available for *nix too. And the equivalent for SuperKaramba for GNOME is GDesklets and 'Widgets' are called 'Desklets' on GNOME.

Anyway, keep reloading the GnomeLook website for fresh ideas every hour, that'll give you a lot of ideas

I'd go for conky instead of gdesklets or superkaramba. I tried superkaramba but it used to hang a lot. Conky is really light and, if done properly then it comes out beautifully.

gdesklets is the one for Gnome.but is it tough to customize panels?also just research synaptic list for cool packages,not only for customization.for eg:temperature sensors for ur mobo and procy,smart enabled for ur hdd etc.but i discourage "prelink" on Gnome. best of Lux
