redhat 9 will not install in sata and that distro itself is antique.dont go by brand name(as with windows) when it comes to Linux.get ubuntu,http://www.ubuntu.com
it is free and better or even fedora is worth http://fedoraproject.org .
and the successors of RH9 are called fedora.latest fedora is version fedora 7.all new distros installs on sata.
and post on open source section .

What error?

Just to make sure that the files on the DVD are not corrupted run a md5 check. It should be in the installation options while booting through the CD.

Check for md5sum on the net (I dont know which version you are talking about so cant help) and cross check it with yours. If there is any changes then the DVD is corrupted.

u need to select a minimal installation,ie,where the package selection page appears,u select just gnome,Xorg only.later, after installation,u can complete other packages.also while installing the installer will stuck at one particular package name(.rpm),unselect that package also.
