Linux desktop text search engine revs up
Apr. 30, 2007
The Recoll project team on April 26 announced the release of version 1.8.1 of its free, open-source, full text search tool for Linux desktops. Recoll is based on the "very strong" Xapian backend, which provides an easy-to-use, feature-rich, QT-based graphical interface, a team member said.
"We borrow a lot of code from other packages, and welcome code and ideas from contributors," the team member said.

Here is a Recoll result list with the mime type icons feature turned on.
Key features of Recoll 1.8.1, according to the project team, are:
- Easy installation, few dependencies; no database daemon, web server, desktop environment or exotic language necessary
- Runs on most Linux- and Unix-based systems
- QT-based graphical user interface
- Supports most common document types
- Powerful query facilities, with boolean searches, phrases, proximity, wild cards, filter on file types, and directory tree
- Multi-language and multi-character set with Unicode based internals
Recoll users who are still learning about the search engine's features are encouraged to check out the team's user manuals, offered online in English and Italian.
"If you have any problem with the package or its installation, or a need for additional features, please contact us," the team member said. "We also very much welcome functional suggestions or (gasp) code ..."
You can download your own copy of Recoll 1.8 here. You need Qt 3.3 (or qt 4) in all cases (configure Recoll with configure --enable-qt4 to build with qt4). Further details are in the Recoll installation manual.
