Re: A nifty tool to open & close cd/dvd drive
That tool is for windows, but I have left if here cos it includes source code but I can't ascertain about the development model, whether it follows FOSS model or not. I have no clue what language that web site it is in.

Doesn't work if you're not using KDE, GNOME or XFCE or am I missing some package?

It works very well with gnome 2.18 on Debian
It works very well with my gnome 2.18 on Debian GNU/Linux and Ubuntu Feisty(may be edgy too i forgot). No worries of closing opened nautilus browser for CD/DVD contents>It automatically resets the view to /home/user in nautilus and ejects the CD.
It works everytime without any failures.no more umount -f
I am using Debian Sid+experimental as suggested by @praka123by using apt-pinning.for novice users Ubuntu Feisty Fawn with GNOME also acts the same.I think HAL(hardware abstraction layer) is controlling this via dbus-a system wide messaging service
the suspects are gnome-volume-manager, hal pmount etc
.May be someone using Fedora 6 also can confirm this that ejecting CD drive by pressng the drive button

Re: A nifty tool to open & close cd/dvd drive
Well it has been there with most of the distros with 2.6.18+ kernel if I remember right, so it should be there in FC 6.
BTW, ||| is for similar and || is for parallel.

You are missing ivman. Look at gentoo wiki for more on its implementation and usage.

I can assure that i dont have ivman installed in my Debian Box.but it works gr8
edit:I think i found the answer.the pkg that controls this eject and auto mount on GNOME is gnome-volume-manager and gnome-mount acting for HAL and dbus in Debian Sid.
gnome-volume-manager=
Quote:
GNOME daemon to auto-mount and manage media devices
gnome-volume-manager is a GNOME daemon that acts as a policy agent in
top of the kernel, udev, d-bus and HAL. It listens to HAL events and
reacts with user-configurable actions. Currently it supports automount
of new media and hot-plugged devices, autorun, autoplay for CDs and
DVDs, and automatic camera management. It is expected to be simple and
free of polling and other evil hacks.
|
gnome-mount=
Quote:
wrapper for (un)mounting and ejecting storage devices
The gnome-mount package contains programs for mounting, unmounting and
ejecting storage devices. The goal for gnome-mount is to get the appropriate
Gnome software (such as gnome-volume-manager and Gnome-VFS) to use his method
instead of invoking mount/umount/eject or direct HAL invoking methods.
All the gnome-mount programs utilize the methods on HAL and as such run
unprivileged. The rationale for gnome-mount is to have a centralized place (in
GConf) where settings (e.g. mount options and mount locations) are maintained.
A nautilus extension allows to easily change the mount options which can be
user, drive or volume specific.
|
so its for GNOME users..
