Question Fedora core 6 DVD.. How to use?

I am trying master the basics of linux and POSIX UNIX commands. I have the Fedora Core 6 DVD. I did a default installation of fedora with GNOME. When I use 'Add/Remove Software' from Applications menu on desktop, to add new software, it downloads them from internet, although they are available in the Fedora Core 6 DVD. How do I make it install from the DVD. Please dont tell me to browse to rpm folder and find the software because this is my first linux and my first week with linux. I have no idea what each software does. I just want to experiment with each and I need the the brief information given in the GUI. The names of the software are quite misleading like aliens is used to convert rpm to deb and I thought it was some game.
