Linux Query...!

Hello friends,
I am a regular user of Windows XP & after founding many advantages of Linux over Windows(from forum & magzines) I think of moving to LINUX.
But there is a problem,before this I once installed Suse Linux,but this distro does not mount my NTFS partition automatically and there is no sound support for my sound chip REALTEK ACL860/880.(i have Intel D915GLVG board).
Now please, I want a favour from all friends to suggest me a good distro which has NTFS automount feature & support for Realtek HD ALC860/880.As I need for home use please suggest preferably free distros. Please give me some links who gave free Linux distros in DVD ISO.
I also heard that downloaded distros are sometimes corrupted so please give some popular MD5 checker for checking integrity.

try fc6... and i think suse 10.2 mounts ntfs automatically...
just google the distros and u ll get the download links..

that audio onboard card is supported by alsa from alsa-1.0.7 onwards...ie looong time back...so yo card must be supported by most distros.

I am having 915 gav motherboard . I am running SuSE 10.2 very well on it. All multimedia applications run well. NTFS partitions automounted during installation. So in nutshell there should be no problem if you install 10.2 opensuse.

I had 915GLVG mobo sometime back. And you are right, it's not fully supported. I mean, you won't be able to run surround sound on it. Even on windows the sound quality is really bad when watching DVD movies in 5.1 configuration. This is because it hase just 3 jacks instead of the 6 jacks that 5.1 cards should have. In native realtek drivers the jacks are configured by software. This is a no-issue if you have stereo or 2.1 speakers. It ran fine on FC5 for me. It recognized the sound card out of the box. I just had to install extra codecs for mp3's.

You can use Open SuSE 10.2. ntfs partiton mounting has been supported for some time now, I am surprised you have problems. Open SuSE is a good choice if you do not want to **** around with terminal screens.
