Please open yast and check the sound card in the hardware section. You can test it there too. And why suse 10, 10.2 is now out.

Open a terminal and type
Code:
alsamixer
and check if none of the required channels are muted or on low volume.

OpenSUSE 10.0 came with alsa v1.0.9 while the chipset 945PM (used by your laptop) was most probably supported from 1.0.12 onwards. You either need to get latest version of OpenSUSE or alsa. Still post the output of lspci (as root) and we will see if there was any support for your particular sound card in 1.0.9.

Better get the latest version Suse 10.2 & install it. This should solve your problem.

Yes, it has recognised the audio card, but please go to yast, hardware, sound card and test it once. Also clik on the KMenu (Start) button, Go to multimedai, volume control, Kmix sound mixer and see if anything is muted there

thanks for the reply. was suse
__________
Thanks for the reply.was suse10.2 given in any previous digit or chip cd? As for testing the sound card in yast, well i did.But once again no sound.although it is evident that my sound card has been recognised.nothing is muted,i have checked and rechecked. Also can you tell me what is the path for the kernel source tree in suse 10.1.the latest version of alsa needs this to install.this is what the install file says:

Kernel Source Tree
On 2.4/2.6 kernels, the location of the kernel source tree is
parsed automatilly from the running kernel.
If it's not in the standard place, specify the path via
--with-kernel=<kernel_directory>.
On 2.6 kernels, the build directory has to be given via
--with-build=<kernel_build_dir> option additionally, too.

If it would have detected your audio device properly then the part in bold would have said "Audio Device" instead of mentioning the class. You should try to install latest ALSA. The kernel source tree should be located in /usr/src/linux directory.

It would be far better to upgrade to any latest distro then going through all this specially if you're new or don't have enough time to tinker around. If you have time then go ahead.
