Enabling Multimedia in Ubuntu

Hi guys,
Im a newbie to linux.and i ve installed ubuntu6.10.What i need is i want to enable multimedia in ubuntu .I dont have net connection in my system.Then how to do all those things which u have told in the related threads??
Please help me.
