1. System => Administration => Network
2. Fill ur root password
3. Activate the network device i.e eth0, if its not there then add it
4. Fill in the DNS entries
5. After all set edit the eth0 and make it static ip there with adress = "192.168.1.2" , subnetmask="255.255.255.0" and gateway="192.168.1.1"
6. Open terminal "ping 192.168.1.1"
7. If alls well, ur blessed!
8. try "ping yahoo.com"
9. If alls well then ur connection is ready else there is something wrong with connection at hardware level or dns settings.

Also since ur a newbie refer to this Linux: Making Life Easy and other threads in stickies.

I'll advice to buy a LAN card then, coz ROuter through USB is still very cumbersome and may not work.

Also the connection via a LAN card is more stable in any OS than via USB. The reasons for it are posted somewhere in the forum but I am too lazy to search for it now.

I've heard even USB drivers for modem-a-routers are not good even for windows -that it sometimes affects the stability of broadband connxn.so BB via Lan Card is good imho.brands? may be dlink ones?

What u have heard is absolutely correct. Its a real pain when Internet USB connections break frequently.
