Ubuntu 6.06 64bit hangs on shutdown !

Ubuntu refuses to shutdown. The 32 bit never had any such problem but this 64 bit is really buggy. It just freezes with a blank screen. system:
Intel P4 EMT64 2.66 GHz, 1GB RAM, Asrock 945 mobo.

did u enabled root in Ubuntu?
OK. try CTRL+ALT+F1 to get a login prompt .then try:

/sbin/shutdown -h now

next time while getting grub menu.press kbd `e` to edit the kernel line remove the "quiet splash" in the line.view the error message while shutting down.post it here.
