Suse 10.1-How to unmount usb drive. No permissions?

I just purchased a 1 gb transcend jetflash drive. Works fine in windows and in linux. But windows has a safely remove hardware option. How do we do that in linux?
I tried running KwikDisk, and the system tray icon gives the following option at the bottom. '/media/usbdisk',

but when i click on that to unmount, it gives an error saying
called: umount /dev/sdb1
umount: /dev/sdb1 is not in the fstab (and you are not root)

What can I do. Is it ok to simply unplug the drive? --waiting with the drive in the drive in the usb port ---

I guess its ok to pull out a PnP device if its in a non-active state. I've been doing that on Windows for a long time now and no issues.

Thanks qwerty. But I still feel uneasy as the light in the pen drive is burning.

Just add the USB drive entry to /etc/fstab. So, you can manually mount/unmount it.

Right click the drive and select eject or move to trash.

I feel it's better to have it down in fstab. So you have manual control over it. Anyways that' what I am more comfortable with.
