Thumbs up Mandriva Linux 2007 will be released in a few days!!

Mandriva Linux 2007: a quantum leap!!

Mandriva 2007 Linux is slated to be released on October 3rd, 2006.

The key innovation of Mandriva Linux 2007 is the spectacular AIGLX and
Xgl 3D-accelerated desktop. Mandriva is the only distribution to
provide both technologies, making it compatible with the widest range
of hardware; a special tool features auto-detection of the best 3D
solution for your hardware
. Mandriva is particularly happy to have
achieved this major breakthrough in desktop appearance.

In addition, a new theme named Ia Ora ("hello" in French Polynesian)
has been introduced, changing everything from window borders to
widgets and icons. We have taken particular care in designing this new
theme, which is simpler and lighter, more luminous, with several
colors (each product has its own color) and an "iced" effect for
outline windows. And we already have very good feedback from users
.

Mandriva also developed Invictus Firewall, a high-availability
redundant firewall cluster system. Multiple firewall machines can be
set up so in case one breaks down or requires maintenance, users can
keep on working. This feature is available in Mandriva Linux Powerpack+ 2007.

Besides the qualities that ensured the success of the 2006 version,
Mandriva Linux 2007 includes the latest innovations in the fields of
office suite applications, Internet, multimedia and the new
virtualization and 3D-accelerated desktop technologies. Not only does
Mandriva Linux 2007 bring to you the most advanced Linux operating
system, but it also includes some very special new software. Now you
can:

* Watch all your favorite movies legally on LinDVD, the first
fully-integrated DVD player designed for Linux, and the most complete
solution available on the market;

* Play video games with TransGaming's Cedega (retail price: $5 per
month), specifically designed for running games written for Microsoft
Windows(r) under Linux;

* Discover FlatOut (retail price: $39.99), the famous car racing
game; Enjoy 6 months of anti-virus protection with Kaspersky (retail
price: $49.95);

* Benefit from the powerful BitDefender (retail price: $49.95) to
secure and manage your most valuable asset: information;

* Run and manage any virtual machine with VMware Player, an
integrated system virtualization solution.

Moreover, Mandriva Linux 2007 users can make unlimited voice calls for
free with Skype, import, manage and play music with amaroK or Banshee,
easily install, uninstall and update software with a new integrated
version of the rpmdrake software management tool, and preserve files
and folders with Arkeia Smart Backup
.

As usual, Mandriva Linux 2007 is available in three versions:
Discovery (for the Linux beginner), Powerpack (for the advanced
computer user) and Powerpack+ (for SOHO users)
.

Finally, an updated, Mandriva Linux 2007-based version of Mandriva
One, the all-in-one live CD, will be available with the 2007 launch.
Simply insert the Mandriva One CD in your CD-ROM drive to launch the
system and access office, Internet and multimedia tools, with no need
to install. Later, if you choose to, a few clicks are all that is
needed to install Mandriva One onto your hard drive, along with any
files you created while in Live mode. Once installed, Mandriva One can
be used, updated, expanded and maintained just like any other copy of
Mandriva Linux 2007.

Mandriva Linux 2007 also include the most up-to-date versions of key
open source products such as:

* kernel 2.6.17
* GCC 4.1
* GNOME 2.16
* KDE 3.5.4
* glibc 2.4
* Xen 3.0
* Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.7
* OpenOffice.org 2.0.3
* Kaspersky antivirus
* drakVPN
* New 3D desktop ( with drak3D for configuring it)

"For Mandriva Linux 2007, we decided to go back to the roots of
Mandriva's success: integration of the latest technology into a
stable, consistent and easy to use system, in the spirit of open
source and choice that only Mandriva is able to offer," says Florent
"Warly" Villard, Consumer Product Manager of Mandriva.

As usual what will keep me away is that rpm never really matches debian in package management IMO. Also, the lack of availability of huge no. of precompiled binaries as on debian/ubuntu. Anyways let's hope Mandriva bounces back into the market and catches up with giants like Red Hat, Novell and Canonical. More the competition, better it is.

@Mehul, I agree that Mandriva's RPM can't match Debian Package Management.
Look at Mandriva PowerPack. It surely packs a punch!! Looks like Mandriva
is determined to recover lost ground in the highly competitive Linux distros market.
Let's wait & watch. Let the race begin!!

I have been away from any RPM/DEB distros since very long but what exactly do you think is the problem with RPM and not with DEB? AFAIK they both suck but I would like to know why RPM sucks more?

@Gary. without paid versions they can't survive!!! Development needs money.
Come on @Gary, the best way is to pay if you want a good distro - it's reasonably
priced!! Also you can split the costs with your friends!!! That way it's very affordable.
For eg., 4 of your friends pay 1000 Rs/- each & buy a Mandriva Power Pack.
And all 4 of you can install it!!! It's better than paying 900/- Rs to your ISP & downloading
it, without proprietary software!!!

Debian package management is way better than RPM , +1

@JGuru , no offence , bit i think if you have to pay then why not pay for windows . And if you want a good distro ( with propreitary software ) then i think SLED 10 is good . it's free + has propreitary codecs so i think it's a good choice .

Cos you never own your copy of windows even after paying for it but you do own your copy of Linux.
Also, you are free to look at it's code and modify it which is not possible in case of windows. If support for your version of windows is stopped it becomes very vulnerable, support for Open Source software is not stopped unless it is totally abandoned.
And why pay for spyware?

Yeah true , but i'm talking about an end user who'll never even care about the soure code . But i won't pay for linux , i'll donate the same amount if i have to though ( obviously to some linux project ) .

Remember you not only pay them for those proprietory codecs - which they have to pay to bundle in the distro, but we as end-users get it for free, but also for support. Support does not matter for us but it matters for business users and not so geeky.
Remember when we speak of end user, it also takes into account people who develop softwares, so you may not know any programming but it could be your friend who is a good programmer. Now if you need to extend some functionality to your existing application, then your developer friend can do so as you have the code, but can you do that in proprietory software?
Now just replace 'friend' with 'community' and you get the real scenario in the OSS world.
