Default Problem with SUSE 9.1

hello guys,
I got a P4 2.8 GHz machine with an 80gb hdd and 512mb ram.its got winXP on it and i wanted to add SUSE 9.1 too..i got this free distribution of linux from the digit DVD given out a while ago..i burnt the iso image onto a cd using nero and i was installing it on my system.everythin went smoothly until i was asked to create a root password as the admnistrator. To my surprise..nothin i typed in was appearin on the screen...it was as if the system simply didnt recognise the keyboard...I tried reinstallin and everything else u usually would try..nothin seems to work???any ideas whats wrong?the keyboard works perfectly well otherwise....
