No sound in computer games
There is no sound in any computer game.(including Alien Arena given in July issue) However there is no problem playing audio/video files in xine, Kaffeine,Amarok,RealPlayer etc. I am using SuSE Linux 10.1 with win32codec installed. Sound is onboard Intel 915 GAV motherboard and P4 2.8 GHz. Please help so that we can enjoy computer games in Linux too.

Re: No sound in computer games
Yeah, I tried playing games in Linux, but gave up very soon. The experience was unpleasant to say the least. Anyways, make sure nothing else is running on your computer. By nothing else, I mean any program that would be using ur sound card.

Re: No sound in computer games
Looks like this game is not routing its sound through the sound server. If you are using GNOME then stop esound and if you are using KDE then stop aRts.

Re: No sound in computer games
@DrSethi, Make sure that no other program is accessing the Sound card.
Open the Terminal Window & type:
Login as Root:
$ su -
$ ps -ef
(This will list all the processes that are running in your O.S. Check for the process
accessing your Sound card).
To terminate the process:
$ kill <PID>
PID -> Process ID
CAUTION: Terminating a System process will crash or hang your System!!.
So use be careful before terminating any System process.

Re: No sound in computer games
@Drsethi, why you are running SAMBA ? You don't need to run Samba File Server
unless you are on a Network & want to share Files & printers in a Network!!
The Process List tells me that you are running KDE, Konsole, FireFox, etc.,
You can configure what processes start during the Suse Linux booting, by configuring
the 'Services' in the Yast. Disable 'Samba' from the 'Services'.
It looks fine. Start running the game after you login in KDE. You should definitely
hear the sound

Confused with what man? DirectX = Windows-ONLY, surely you must be knowing that!

Re: No sound in computer games
@DrSethi, Check whether you need to change the Settings in the game before
playing. Make sure proper Sound card is chosen. Do you know the onboard Sound
card name in your motherboard? Is it 'AC '97' or 'C-Media' or something else?
Select the appropriate one, & see if it works.
