Angry One thing U would love to CHANGE in LINUX?

No doubt, that Linux is a very good operating system......

But no one is perfect and Linux is no exception......

Every system has some or the other flaw and so as Linux has...

Lets discuss some weak points and short comings of Linux so that they get rectified and Linux becomes much better and in fact the best operating system....

All u need to do is to post just one draw back of linux or any one thing that u don't like in Linux......

Also try to post ur idea and view point to solve that problem (not compulsory)....

Starting off from me: What I don't like in Linux????

Well every thing in Linux is kernel specific particularly softwares where software made for one linux kernel at times fails to install in other linux kernel. At times these dependencies become very frustrating......

General drivers support. There are so many things that still don't work out of the box with various distros and you have to search and struggle before they work.

However, I really cannot stop at 1
I also need standardisation among distros and ease of installtion of softwares.

Software installation/uninstallation routines need to be reworked.I don't want the .rpms & the .debs.

Standardization, as someone mentioned earlier, is also a must.

Yeah man, drivers are desparately needed. My Techcom webcam & my HP scanjet 2400 are pretty much useless in Linux right now. Have to use Windows just for these two things

1.) Packages name should be more user friendly, not like kermit, synaptic, etc (even I can't pronounce many of them ).
2.) Setups should also be user friendly, like Windows just NEXT, NEXT & NEXT...

@VG - they can make it simple but then they might violate the copyrights of other companies that use it!

@vishal: next -> next??
how about wandering frame after frame, or type a simple command and get things done??

@Venom: Copyright?? WOW Does M$ have a patent for it?? WOW i'd support this patent alone!! Dont let it to others, World is much better without it!

Many of the grievances i hear about installing applications is that most of u are confused may be by the differences in packaging etc, The only thing that you guys shud know is Where to look for information and packages.

These are the things that need to change in Linux

* Easy of Use, more easier than Windows O.S
* Unified Linux , this should be a standard , so that a application from one distro
can be installed in another distro without any problems.
* Hardware vendors must also include Linux drivers ( both 'rpm' & 'deb' formats)
with Windows drivers in the CD; this will happen when Linux is on equal footing with Windows
* User-friendly Documentation about the usage, tips, etc.,
* Configuration should be done using GUI Wizards, not tweaking the System files!!

And most of all you guys must learn Unix, it's very powerful & easy once you
master the command-line (Terminal Window) interface as @Satish pointed out!!
You can't do away with dependency @Vinayasurya, tell me can you install PhotoShop CS
in Windows 98?? Like that Linux O.S package need certain packages to be installed
before it can be installed.

application installation and un-installation are a pain in da @ss... er.. neck
plus. u cant customise it as winxp.. what i mean 2 say is dat with the help of resource hacker u can even remove the word 'windows' from each and evry component of the os.. (though not legal)... i know u can also do that in linux.. but its not dat easy!!!

P.S. can any one help me with... well how to make a distro, rather it would be more appropriate to say how to recompile a distro?
i mean how to remove those packages which i dun need and add what i need... change the mane of the distro.. change the logos and remaster the distro and make a live cd out of it.
it should have the 'install to harddisk option!... can any one help me with this?

though its distro dependent, still, i would still insist that Linux could do with a better organization of the desktop...especially the taskbar--it really helps when u r new to something.

OK Tech_your_future,
* tgz & source should also be included in the driver CD accompanying the hardware. Sorry I just forgot. I was thinking about the top 4 distros - Ubuntu, Suse,
Fedora, Mandriva.
