Default Fedora core 5 Intallation Problem(Gfx).

Mysystem:
A64 3000+,Asus A8N SLI Prem(1302), xfx 6600GT 256mb PCIe,1gb ram

I am quite familier with fedora core 4.

I D/L the CD ISOs and saved them to a FAT32 Partition. Then using the Boot image(burned) i started installation(askmetho->iso on hdb3).

The graphical setup is not coming up and all i get is a courrupted display. The installation behind it is working. as when i press ENTER it proceeds(as seen thru Ctrl+Alt+F3 output screen).

When i do text install, it installs but with lots of garbage characters all over the blue background during the installation.

Just before asking user for language anaconda does detect my GFX card as nvidia 6600 GT(not XFX).

Even after the text mode install finishes i cant start X. system-config-display does nto work. i tried editiing the X config files but nothing.
even have trouble in text mode as it does not refresh. i.e. when i pass a command i have to toggle sessions to see the output.(like if working on ALT+F1 i have to press ALT+F2 and then ALT+F1 again.)

Pls help
EDIT: i am installing fedora core 5 x86_64

Fedora 5 has several bugs to fix. You can try other distros like Suse 10.1 or Ubuntu.
If these error messages keep coming during installation, better you don't install
Fedora!! Checkout what the Fedora Project has to say: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FAQ
In the 'Getting Started' chapter see : '3 : Is my hardware compatible with Fedora?"
I hope this helps you.

XFX is based on Nvidia Chipset only.. So it will be detected as Nvidia. Also, try installing in 800x600 resolution, is that doesnt work, try 1024x786 resolution. I think the command for that is linux resolution=800x600. Im not very sure, but google for it.

Hmm by default i think it will install in 16 bit colour depth only.. Hmm.. did you try searching for it on google? Im really kinda in a hurry right now or else i would have looked into it. Sorry! But here are some sites that might be usefull:

see: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2322

this seems to be a bug with all a64 systems with pci-e nvidia fgx cards on FC5 x86_64
but i dont know how/where to appny this patch... cany anyone help..

i have d/l the latest nvidia drivers and will try them now and post soon...

EDIT: same discussion here http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=42597

wow man.. either my FC5 copy is bad or this project is still at beta beta beta and more beta stage. new problems keep cropping up.

now i am getting error:256 while installation.
"Failure: repodata/comps.xml from anaconda: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try."

stupid.
i had only one option left. i created a DVD out of the 5 CD isos...
it installs but dude it is a killer.
earlier versions used to be so glitch free...

i am seeing a lot of FC5 (x86_64) errors on nforce4 platforms on the net too.

this is a pain in the a55!!!

OK. I gotta cool down.

I tried to install (sh) the drivers but was getting an error that the kernel-source is needed. after a lot of effort i downloaded the source RPM and installed it then i did rpm as folloes
Code:
nstall the kernel.src.rpm that you chose to install in the previous steps.

Install:
[root@charon fc5]# rpm -ivh kernel-2.6.15-1.1955_FC5.src.rpm
   1:kernel ########################################### [100%]

Set it up:

[root@charon fc5]# rpmbuild -bp --target=$(uname -m) /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/kernel-2.6.spec

The source files will be properly located in '/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/kernel-2.6.15/'
There are 2 useful directories:
  1. 'linux-2.6.15.ARCH/'
This will have the standard kernel.org kernel WITH Fedora patches and updates
The ARCH architecture will match the output of 'uname -m', usually i686
You may use 'noarch' for the target= option if you wish
  2. 'vanilla/'
This will have the standard kernel.org kernel ONLY (no patches or updates)
but still it refused to detect the soruce. so i used the '--kernel-source-path' to pass the path manually.

now i got the error that it cant find 'version.h' in there.
when all else failed i created a file version.h and wrote the version"2.6.15-1.2054" in it.
still nothing and a new error:
Code:
nvidia-installer log file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log'

on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux
       driver download page at www.nvidia.com.

what to do. i know the source has been installed correctly but if it dont have version.h then what can i do.

EDIT:
DAMN! I finally got my broadband pppoe working in fedora. Nvidia drivers ask to connect to the net to download pre compiled kernels so i was thinking that was the last resort. but after i managed to get my pppoe working. this piece of 5hit said that none is available. i have no idea what to attempt next.
