How to make C/C++ programs in Linux?

I've heard of the gcc which is the GNU C Compiler. I just wanted to know how to use it and whether I can make all C/C++ programs in it like I make in my Turbo C++ compiler?

If it isnt good enough, can you suggest any other tool best suited to do so.

My OS is Fedora Core and Mepis
