Subject: [opensuse-announce] SUSE Linux 10.1 RC1

I'm glad to announce SUSE Linux 10.1 Codename "Agama Lizard" RC1.

We've created on
ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/install/...10.1-RC1-Extra
(and on the mirrors of it) a repository with some non-OSS software.
The same software is also available via two non-OSS CDs that can be
used during installation as Add-On Media. There's one media for both
i386 and x86-64 (SUSE-Linux-10.1-RC1-Addon-BiArch) and one for
PowerPC (SUSE-Linux-10.1-RC1-Addon-ppc).

Please read the complete list of Known Issues at:
http://www.opensuse.org/Bugs:Most_Annoying_Bugs

We will make sometime next week an RC2 - and only distribute the delta
ISOs of any RCs, and update the factory tree as well.

Have a lot of fun!
Andreas

PS: Here're all the details for downloading:

SUSE Linux 10.1 is offered via bittorrent and via normal download.
Please use a mirror or the download.opensuse.org URL which directs you
to a mirror.

The distribution comes with 5 CDs. You need:
* CD1 only for a minimal text installation (English)
* CDs 1-3 for a default KDE or GNOME installation in German or English
* All CDs for other selections

Bugs:Most Annoying Bugs

Large scale testing showed a couple of issues especially with update of systems. I would advise everybody to be carefull in updating a system - and not update a production system (see below).
The bootloader shows "SUSE Linux 10.1 10.1" Bug 165466
Installation of packages from the installation source with rug/zen-installer fails in the installed system Bug 165597. We have put fixed packages (zen-updater, rug, libzypp-zmd-backend) for this on the ftp server, download them from [1] .
Updating from a previous beta tries to delete far too many packages. You should see conflicts for this in the installation proposal. Bug 165798
Every update adds another selection to the system Bug 160792.
Installationsources are not available in the system Bug 165825
The YaST2 Xen module is not able to setup a VM (Bugs are getting filled now).

A special Add-On CD with non-OSS software is available as well from [2].

Hmm... Heard that Suse is gonna use GNOME by default from this release on, is that true ?

I expect a bootable DVD with May issue of LFY.

Good to hear of the new RC of SUSe. Hope we see some major new changes in 10.1 final. And it will surely be good to see FC 5 or Suse 10.1 in the next issue of digit. Though I am more looking forward to Dapper Drake.

If by default you mean that what gets installed if user doesn't select anything, then yes it is true. I wonder what will happen to YaST now. Will they make it GTK based or what?
