Default Connecting net in Ubuntu

Hello members ,

Presently I am connecting to the net ( broadband BSNL ) through the ADSL modem ( D-link DSL- 502T) in the xp environment . I do have the Ubuntu 5.1 live cd but do not know how to configure the modem . If I configure the modem in the Ubuntu environment , would the settings for the modem change in the xp environment ( in other words would I have to reconfigure the modem once I switch to xp ?) I am sorry if this is a repeat question , I did a quick search but did not get any specific answer .

Secondly , could you suggest me a book on Ubuntu , the bookwallahs have heard of Red Hat only .

Thanks .
