Default unable to access registry editor window

hello all,

I have Windows XP installed on AMD 1300+,80 GB HDD, 256 MB ram. I find it impossible to edit my registry either from start->run->regedit or from command prompt->regedit. The editor window appears for a moment and then closes on its own within one or two seconds. Is it due to infection by some viruses..? I have AVG free antivirus installed. A full scan has not revealed any virus. What could be the problem
