Slackware 10.1
I installed slackware 10.1.I installed only disc 1 so no gnome.when I boot into slackware and then I give the command startx I get a blank screen.I have a samsung syncmaster793MB and an nvidia geforce 2 Mx video card

Slackware doesn't try to detect the display hardware by itself, run xorgconfig as root and configure your settings
Hardware - Celeron 266 MHz, 128MB RAM, Intel i740 8MB RAM
Software - Slackware Linux 10.1; Archlinux 0.7; Windows 98 SE

ok.When I boot I get a message saying incompatible mode.Select mode.what is that.

Do you get this message while the OS is just loading up, or when it tries to initialise the display (on running startx)? It sounds like your monitor is not able to handle the resolution/refresh rate. Could you post the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf here? Also, what did you enter in the horizontal and vertical refresh rates for your monitor?
