[Phoronix] Doom 3 Source Code Published Under The GPL

The Doom 3 source-code -- based upon the id Tech 4 engine -- is now available as open-source software to the gaming community under the GNU GPL license.

Pushed onto GitHub is the Doom 3 source-code. This comes after John Carmack had to work-around Carmack's Reverse due to legal issues. The source drop is right in line with what we were expecting.

More details to come soon on the open-source drop of Doom 3, which will hopefully spark a new wave of more impressive free software games.

Note the game assets do not come with the code, so you cannot just build the entire game itself using this code.

Hoping to see good games coming out of this great engine.

Nice. I guess the community will enhance the game with lots of hd-textures and new weapons and all. Hopefully, I will finish the game this time.

Nope. The game assets are not the part of the source code release. They can all be recreated though.
Expect to see some quality OSS shooters though. Something in lines of Urban Terror powered by id Tech 4 engine maybe.

Did a yaourt Doom 3 last night.. Saw that the game engine was there in AUR.. Waiting for some awesome shooters..

Urban Terror HD is already in alpha stages, built on ioquake 3 AFAIK.

I was just giving an example.
Yeah UrT uses the Quake 3 derivative. Apparently they'll license the commercial Quake 3 engine to build their Urban Terror HD.
