Ubuntu no sound

This is a problem I'm struggling from many months. No sound from hda sound card. I have tried alsa hda 1.0.23 and 1.0.24. No use.

In my case the motherboard integrated chip is VIA VT1708S
Can somebody please help.

Did your sound hardware works fine with Windows??
Also, which sound you are trying to play, I mean which format. If you are trying to play music with .mp3 extension, then make sure that you have required plugins installed. Plugins required to play .mp3 aren't shipped with Ubuntu.

i am not telling about music format. My sound hardware works fine in windows. And I have all plugins installed and vlc player also installed.

Front mic and audio are not working. When I make some changes in ALSA, my device get unrecognized in Ubuntu. Then Only one way left is to reinstall. Yaa it works fine in AC97 mode which I have to select in mobo bios. But I want High def Audio not AC97
