If you are not running some kind of mail server or file server for a network then you don't need an Antivirus on your Linux installation. As for firewall you can have a look at Guarddog or Firestarter and you don't need a Antispyware.

I suggest, you install PCQ Linux 2005 (it is based on FC3). It comes with a few anti-virus softwares like ClamAV. Firewalls come with all distros. Additionally, their customisation is also good.
If you want PCQL, you can either contact them directly or contact me
BTW, don't forget to get their PCQL SP1. It contains some bug fixes.
In a GNU/Linux distro installed in a desktop, as of now, I don't feel its necessary to have an antivirus. Due to its architecture, viruses can't really create havoc on a Linux machine. But you never know about the future and its always safer to have an anti-virus with heuristic capabilities installed.
If its a server attached to a few Windows machines, you better have one.

hi tuxfan,
i will take ur advice. but since i have burned 4 CDs for FC4 frm this month digit DVD ... i wanna install FC4 first to c how it is like ...
this is what i did...
i have 2 HDDs one 20GB (where winXP is installed.) and another 40GB where i have files and some programs stored.
i tried to install FC4 in the HDD which contains Windows XP after creating another partition for it.
but after the installation of FC4 started it refused to accept the partition for partition as it was not a primary partition.(i dont know whats primary partition and logical one )
then i quit the installation and thru WinXP installed Partition Magic 8.0 and created a linux partition (10GB) in the 40GB HDD and then started the FC4 installation again !!!
then the installation proceeded and i selected all the options (all features to be installed) .....
i got a message saying that all the 4 disks are required to complete the installation!!! (i had all the four discs and had tested them using FC4's test and got PASS)
the installation continued for sometime and it didnt ask for the remaining 4CDs !!! and then asked me to click a button to REBOOT the PC ....
on REBOOT i found windows XP booting!!!!
i repeated the procedure and found the same thing happening ...... plz help

It is very likely that the CDs are buggy and have not been burnt completely. There are already a few threads with FC4 problems going on in this forum itself. So it seems that FC4 is problematic.
Additionally, it may have happened that FC4 got installed properly, but GRUB didn't. Just search at this forum. I (and a few others) have posted on how to install GRUB in MBR. You need to boot from the first CD and go to rescue mode to do that.
But I would still suggest that you get PCQL with SP1. They customisation is really good.
As for partitions, a hard disk can have at max 4 primary partitions. Some old partitioning softwares will let you have only one primary partition.
Rest of the space can be occipied by an extended paritions. There can be logical partitions within extended partitions. FC4 can be installed on a logical partition as well.

@QwertyManiac: Please start a new thread and more people will be able to help you. Let iinfi solve his problem here.
@ iinfi: It may so happen that Anaconda (Fedora Installer) version is buggy. Try out FC3 or some other distro and see what happens. But if you still want to try FC4, take some other set of CDs and try.

Why don't you PM GNUrag, firewall, ujjwal, etc. with the link of this thread? They have more knowledge than me. May be you can save your CDs

Can you tell us exactly which all options/features you selected for installation. If possible do an install once again and note down all the steps you take. I would also recommend trying a text based install once. May be that will work. FC4 installer has lots of bugs (hv a look at bugzilla and you wd know) but a few hit and trials can be made...
