Default please help (ubuntu 10.04)

hi everyone..
i installed ubuntu 10.04 and it was working fine when today after installing
graphics drivers (for ati) and restarting the problem began

when i select ubuntu from the boot menu, then blinking cursor comes
at the top left corner and then the screen goes blank...

the disk usage led indicator too shows no activity....and it stops responding
after waiting a long time...when i press the power button then the ubuntu boot screen comes up and the laptop shuts down....

please tell me how to fix it...i dont want to reinstall again as i applied many updates along with installing other multimedia softwares

its important as i saved all my c programs at the desktop
and also tell me if there is any other way of retriving them(the folder in the desktop).

Thanks in advance.

Oh folks...please reply...

try this :
press ctrl+alt+f1 and virtual terminal tty1 will show up. login as root and type :
startx or sudo gdm
see if this works for you. And to backup your programs, use ubuntu livecd and cmount the ubuntu home partition and copy the contents to a pd or anywhere u want.
