This is a very good article which presents a brief overview of many popular linux distributions, from Redhat, Suse, Ubuntu to Gentoo and Arch, it has many. A good read for all -

Also refer tips & tricks thread and read the intro to linux which is more or less the same thing but a bit elaborate.
